River Rother – Coultershaw

This stretch of the lower Rother contains a good head of Chub and Barbel along with Dace, Perch, Roach, Grayling, Gudgeon, Carp, Bream, Pike, Brown and Rainbow Trout and also has a good run of Sea Trout. The Barbel are well into double figures and the Chub have been caught to 5lb 8oz. Over the last couple of years we have seen a resurgence in the silver fish population with good nets of Roach and Dace being caught on a regular basis this together with Chub that average over 4lb, the average Barbel in excess of 10lb and some extremely hard fighting river Carp make for an extremely attractive water for both the specimen and pleasure angler.

The Mill Pool at Coultershaw

This stretch has deservedly earned a reputation as a specimen water with our local anglers and large static baits account for a lot of the bigger specimens. However for the pleasure angler nothing beats running a stick float through which usually produces a better bag of fish as far as numbers are concerned. Fishing far bank slacks with a pole can also be a deadly method especially when there is a good flow.

There is plenty of bankside cover on this stretch

The current River Rother Barbel record now stands at 18lb 9oz caught by Ian Duffy in November 2014.  To view a photo of the captor with this superb specimen please click HERE.
