Normally Petworth Park is the venue for the first match of the season. However these matches in previous years have seen low weights as the bream have been spawning. So I decided to move them a couple of weeks later. This seemed to work as all the anglers caught bream. One angler was pegged behind the islands with the others pegged along the road stretch. “Biker” Steve Warner was already fishing when we arrived having not read his handbook and noted that a match was scheduled. However the pegs he was fishing was not one that we intended using so he was allowed to stay and ended up with a good catch of bream.

The day was sunny with a wind blowing at force 3-4 with occasional gusts of 5-6, straight at the roadside swims, which made pole fishing difficult but not impossible. As the previous day had been very warm most anglers had turned up with minimal clothing and cold drinks but the day turned out to be colder and they wished that had brought extra clothes and hot drinks.

Fishing to the right of the concrete slab was Keith Hughes who used the pole to catch 5 bream weighing 19-2-0 to win the bream. Keith was on the Golden Peg but unfortunately the money carried over from last season had been won the previous week.

Gary Collins was fishing behind the islands and used the method feeder to catch 4 bream and 1 tench to weigh in 18-2-8.

In third place was Colin Bridger who was fishing to the left of the concrete slab and used sweet corn on the pole to catch 4 bream weighing 16-15-8.
