Well after our last experience at Bethwins we hoped for some better weather this time round but we were again faced with heavy rain for the first few hours of the match although it did brighten up for the last couple of hours.

Vince was the only survivor from the first match to fish the top lake.
Newcomer Mick Greenway and occasional match angler Kevin Leighfield took the places of Steve Jeffery who is currently trying to drink Florida dry and Rab who because he is not that well at the moment decided that discretion was the better part of valor as far as the weather was concerned and went home.

Now a couple of weeks ago having heard that Geoff our Treasurer had been up to Bethwins and had a good day on the tench Vince was seen to be in deep conversation with him. Obviously tactics and baits were discussed and Vince had quite clearly formulated his master plan. Both Kevin and Mick were venue virgins (Mick to the degree that he wasn’t even quite sure where the place was) so they would be fishing by the seat of their pants.

Geoff – I think Vince owes you a pint as the plan obviously paid off as Vince brought 15 – 11- 0 to the scales consisting of 4 carp one of which was very small (good to see that they are obviously breeding in the lake however) and 8 tench with a few bits and pieces. The secret bait was revealed to be good old-fashioned bread which Vince fished punched even picking up a couple of perch.

Kevin elected to fish another traditional bait and had 10 tench and a fair number of perch on worm for a total of 12 – 10 – 0. Mick alternated between maggot and sweet corn and also caught tench and perch for a total of 5 – 10 – 0.

With a victory on both lakes and a superior weight Vince wins the Milliard Cup.Copyright Petworth and Bognor Angling Club West Sussex
