Well the weather forecast was awful and perhaps that put off other potential attendees as we only had three pairs turn out for what was the closest mixed pairs match ever.

The contenders were (in no particular order) Vince Herringshaw and his daughter Megan, reigning champions and indeed champions for the past three year Steve (you’ve guessed it) Jeffery with Samantha and finally your long suffering Match Secretary (Steve Simmonds) and his wife Angela.

Steve and Angela drew halfway along the north bank (river side), Steve and Samantha at the top end of the lake on the south bank and Vince and Megan drew the carp pond end of the south bank.

Tactics for each team were similar – the lady was furnished with a whip (no jokes) and was to fish for the small stuff whilst the ‘anglers’ would target the bigger fish.

Vince being close to the reeds at the carp pond end targeted the carp that are resident there – did battle with 6 and lost each time! Steve Jeffery fished over to the island and found one better fish – one of the ‘is it a brown goldfish or is it a crucian?’. Steve Simmonds had several attempts at fishing the island but all to no avail, the fish just didn’t seem to be on that particular peg. But fishing down the middle on a bigger bait – trying to find some of the better roach he did manage to find two of the goldfish / crucian.

Catch of the day was undoubtedly the two roach caught by Megan – these together weighed 1 – 10 and were in tip top condition.

The result couldn’t have been closer Steve Simmonds and Angela weighed in a total of 9 – 6 – 0 for first place. Vince and Megan were just second with an all silver fish net of 9 – 4 – 0 and in 3rd place were Steve Jeffery and Samantha with 9 – 1 – 0.
