Nine club anglers and three from Portsmouth and District Angling Society turned out at Walberton on Sunday 3rd January for the 2nd leg of the Pole Only series. We hoped to be fishing on both ponds with people fishing the pond that they didn’t fish in the December match. However when we got to the water it was obvious that Cart was not going to be fishable because of a thick covering of ice. Stemps was a little better with a few swims clear and we were able to break the ice sufficiently to give us 10 swims. Dennis and his friend said that they would step down – many thanks gents, so the rest of us could fish.

Because of the conditions we decided to shorten the match to four hours and then did the draw. The normal ‘hot’ pegs No’s 1, 2 and 15 were drawn by Keith, Kevin and John who were all quite happy as they thought that they should be able to find the odd carp feeding, but it was not to be and all the weights (such as they were) actually came from the bottom straight with no one on the sides catching at all. Whether it was because they persisted in looking for a carp – who can tell.

Vince was drawn in peg 11 one of the deepest pegs on the pond and after a quiet start began to find a few small fish and ended up with 14 oz, easily enough for first place

Alan from Portsmouth looked to be running away with it from peg 9 at the start, after the first couple of hours he was the only angler that had caught, but his swim went quiet, however his 3 oz was sufficient for second place.

Mick on peg 10 found eight small fish for his 1 oz and third place.

Over the two legs Vince with wins in both matches easily won the Pole Only Trophy.
