Match Report
This was the first leg of the commercial based Presidents Cup and was fished at Bernies at Ashington. The match was fished under heavy rain showers until the last couple of hours when things started to dry up and the weigh-in was held under sunny conditions. Normally the matches at this venue are dominated by good sized carp but this time the majority of the few carp caught were small but there were two good catches of silverfish caught on the whip. It was decided to leave out the four corner pegs and spread the anglers along the straights on both sides of the lake.Mike Kitchener, who won the last match here on a large feeder caught bag of carp could only catch one carp on this method. He decided to switch to the whip to target the silverfish and caught 17lb plus of these. Overall he weighed in 19 – 5 – 4.
Very close behind was Vince Herringshaw who caught 4 carp weighing 9lb plus on the long pole along with a similar weight of whip caught silverfish to weigh in 1 ounce less than Kitch with a weight of 19 – 4 – 4.
Colin Bridger fished soft pellet on the long pole to catch 5 carp weighing 14-2-8.
