Rother veteran Martin Cornish has broken his Barbel PB with a fantastic fish of 13lb 12oz from the River Rother. Unfortunately Martin was fishing alone when he landed the pristine specimen during a short evening session after work, consequently he only has the photo below of the fish lying on his unhooking mat. Martin has been a regular on our Rother stretches for many years but had not managed a double figure Barbel from the Rother until he landed a 12lb 10oz beauty in September 2008, but he hasn’t looked back since.
These Rother fish are no mugs and you usually have to work hard for each one, as Martins diary of catches for this season illustrates. He has managed to fit in 14 visits to the Rother in the first six weeks of the new season (4 day sessions and 10 evenings). They have resulted in the following – 5 blanks and one fish on each of the other 9 sessions – six chub between 3 and 4lb 8oz and three barbel at 8lb 4oz, 10lb 4oz and now this new personal best 13lb 12oz fish. Incidentally the blanks were in heavy rain and thunder storms!
Martin has now vowed to get himself sorted with a camera set up that will allow him to take self portraits in the hope that he can beat his PB again in the near future.
