Summary of the 2008/9 Matches

Although not picking up many of the Match Trophies a strong overall performance by Vince Herringshaw has given him a clean sweep of the three main Cups for the season, winning the Matchman Cup with 892 points, the Aggregate Weights Cup with 195lb and the Club Championship with 154 points.

Vince Herringshaw won all three major Trophies for the 2008/9 Season.

Steve Simmonds picked up six of the match trophies although he did have assistance with two – winning the Mixed Pairs with his wife Angela and the Pairs with Club Champion Vince. He also tied with Keith Hughes for the Kirby Bott Cup and this is the first time for at least twelve years that two anglers couldn’t be separated for a trophy.

Last years ‘nearly man’ Rab Butler who came second in virtually everything last season came back with a bang to pick up five of the Match Trophies. Rab showed his all round skill and determination by winning matches on both our stillwaters and rivers.

The afore mentioned Keith Hughes weighed in with four but it could have been at least a couple more and perhaps even higher honours but for a season of lost fish.
Overall top weight in a single match went to Paul Ward with 65lb 12oz from the Match Lake at Sumners Ponds and top match weight from one of our own waters went to Roger Weetman with 53lb 3oz from Petworth Park.

The match men have hung up their fishing gear up for a couple of months, some of them to do some serious decorating and home maintenance to ensure they are allowed out for the new match season that starts on 31st May at Petworth Park.

Finally mention should go to Peter Foster who has been awarded the new Specimen Challenge Trophy for a string of Barbel including the seasons best at 14lb 2oz. Very close behind and with an excellent mixed offering of specimen Bream, Carp and Barbel was Nelson Keet.
