16 turned up for this match and this consisted of committee members, bailiffs and some of the regular matchmen. The original venue for this match was the Granary but the club no longer has access to this water as it had been sold. Bernie’s match lake at Ashington was selected as a suitable alternative. This lake is very much like Cart but is about 200 metres long and the island can be reached with 13-14 metres of pole.

Nelson and several others had fished the water in the previous weeks and had some good catches of carp and decent sized skimmers. However we were met with frost at Bernie’s and unfortunately the venue did not show its true potential.  At least it stayed dry throughout the match. Nelson and myself walked round the lake and selected the pegs with features on the island.

Fishing on one of the corner pegs was Mike Kitchener who showed that he is not just an excellent river angler by catching 23-6-0 of carp to finish first. This consisted of various sized carp caught on the feeder using dead maggots as bait.

Fishing in the other corner on the same side of the lake was Keith Hughes who caught 7 carp on the pole to finish second with 18-8-0.

Steve Speller did not have a good start to the match breaking one of his pole sections. However he used his feeder rod to catch 12 carp weighing 16-6-0 to finish third.

The committee cup was won by  Phil Tubb who caught 15-15-12 of carp fishing the pellet on the pole close to the island. Overall everyone was impressed with the venue and we will try and include it in the calendar for next season, preferably when there is no chance of frost.
