Match Report
This was the last match of the 2016/2017 match season and as usual was an away day, being fished on the Ribbon Lake at the Sumners Pond complex. Several of the match anglers had fished with the Sportsman Club in September and there had been some good catches of bream, skimmers and barbel. Although the temperatures were lower than those experienced in that match, hopes were high of some reasonable catches. This proved to be the case with seven double figure weights and everyone catching at least one barbel.
The day was grey, but dry but with a very strong wind which made pole fishing difficult and kept blowing poles off pole rests. Keith Hughes had a bad day breaking one of his pole sections when it blew off his rest along with breaking a top kit whilst landing a barbel.
Another challenge was the calves that were wandering around the field behind us and took an interest in our tackle- Vince did a grand job as herdsmen moving the calves on. We had half of the lake and fished from the bridge down the left hand side and also put two pegs on the island.
In first place was Richard LeDuc who was fishing the end peg furthest from the bridge. He used meat fished over groundbait to catch skimmers, bream, barbel and also two tench. These weighed 25-8-12 and were caught on the long pole.
Fishing next to Richard was Paul Ward who pole fished meat over micro-pellets to catch skimmers, bream, barbel and a chub weighing 19-11-0.
Third place was taken by Glen Riley fishing next to the bridge. He fished the long pole, using pinkies, maggots or pellets to catch skimmers, crucians and one barbel to weigh in 17-7-4.
Overall Keith Hughes won the Clubman Trophy with 149 points from Vince Herringshaw (144 points) and Mick Greenway (138 points).
Keith won the Matchman Trophy with 1765 points from Vince (1260 points) and Mick (1253 points).
The Aggregate Weight trophy was also won by Keith with a superb weight of 412-1-8 from Mick (291-9-0) and Vince (290-3-0).
